There is good news for people concerned about car accidents in Maine. The number of crashes and fatalities has decreased over the past decade or so, according to The Bangor Daily News. In 2003, there were 35,000 annual automobile collisions in the state of Maine. This number has dropped to 28,000 in 2012. Fatal accidents are down from 202 to 163 deaths.

The reduction of traffic accidents is the byproduct of the Department of Transportation’s focus on the most dangerous roads, highways, and intersections, say traffic engineers. Safety projects – such as the roundabout where I-95 meets Lewiston Road and the Gardiner Service Plaza – are preventing a number of devastating and deadly accidents.

Despite improvements, there are still accident-prone areas that have not been addressed yet. Four of the most dangerous intersections are in the Augusta area. The area with the most car accidents in Maine is currently the four-way intersection of the I-95 Exit 102 ramp, the Gardiner Service Plaza entrance, and Lewiston Road in West Gardiner, with 27 accidents over a three-year period.

Other dangerous spots for Maine drivers include: the I-95 South and Western Avenue (Exit 109B) intersection – with 97 accidents; Cony Circle on the eastern side of the Kennebec River – with 126 accidents; Memorial Circle on the western side of the Kennebec River – with 107 accidents; and the intersection where Cumberland Street meets Warren Avenue in Westbrook – with 66 accidents. According to the MDOT, at least $4.1 million has been set aside to improve these areas, but it could be years until we see improvement.

So why are Maine roadways so plagued with auto accidents? Traffic engineers say it is a combination of factors. While traffic circles are generally safer to navigate, Cony and Memorial circles are both located in the state capital, where there is an increased number of drivers from out-of-state who are unfamiliar with their surroundings, as well as higher levels of distracted drivers traveling to the hospital and business meetings.
